  • HOW IS IT DONE?

The operation is performed through laparoscopy, with four small incisions of one to two centimeters each made in the abdomen. Seventy-five to eighty percent of the stomach is then removed. This minimally-invasive procedure requires just a short stay at the hospital.

  • WHY IS IT DONE?

The purpose of the operation is to dramatically decrease the amount of food eaten without causing hunger. Appetite is dramatically controlled by the restrictive effect of the new stomach, leading to an early feeling of fullness.

  • CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY

Candidates for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy must be at least 45 kg (100 lb) overweight, which is equivalent to having a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40. Less overweight individuals, with a BMI of 35, may be considered candidates for surgery if they suffer from obesity-related co morbid conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, pain in weight-bearing joints that interferes with daily life, etc.

  • RISKS & COMPLICATIONS

Major surgical complications requiring a second operation to fix occur in about 1% of patients and include bleeding, infection, leakage, organ injury and intestinal obstruction. Risks from developing blood clots in the deep veins of the legs and the lungs are minimized by prophylactic blood thinner, leg pumps and early ambulation.

After surgery eating habits need to be adjusted to the smaller stomach capacity. Failure to control eating behaviors and repeated overeating may cause excessive vomiting, but usually only in the first few months following surgery.

  • ALTERNATIVES

When the degree of excess weight reaches the level of morbid obesity (BMI over 35-40), nonsurgical attempts at weight control fail 95% of the time. Surgical weight loss is currently the only effective and long-lasting method of weight control, with 85% success rate for laparoscopic gastric bypass operation.

As a rule, patients are mobile again on the day of the operation. After the recovery, they are allowed to drink some fluids and leave the hospital on the third day after surgery. After another two days, the patients are completely ready to travel.

The changes to your digestive system involved in sleeve gastrectomy mean that you will need to follow a specific diet. A dietician will see you before you are discharged from hospital to assist you with the changes needed for your new lifestyle. After the second day of the surgery, you can start fluid in taking slowly and on the third day you can take fluids regularly for 14 days and after that time, you can start eating soft foods. You will be able to eat all kind of foods after the 4th week of the surgery.

    • Everyone tolerates foods differently. Avoid those foods known to cause you problems.
